Game of Drones

A recent collaborative project involving St Mary’s University College, Stranmillis University College and St Dominic’s College entitled “Drone Technology in Education Programme” provided multiple STEM-oriented learning experiences for Year 8 pupils.

The project involved one hundred and forty Year 8 pupils from St Dominic’s College and forty Technology and Design student teachers from both St Mary’s and Stranmillis.

Mr Jamie Mulholland, teacher of Technology and Design (St Dominic’s), worked in collaboration with Dr Kieran McGeown (St Mary’s) and Dr Michael Ievers (Stranmillis) in order to both design and deliver the programme of activities. The project has proved to be very successful in terms of delivering all of its teaching and learning objectives. Pupils and students alike commented on how much they valued both the learning and enjoyment which they had experienced throughout the first two full days of the project.

Mr Mulholland is to be congratulated for the effective manner in which the various drone-based activities were organised over the two days of the programme.

This project is linked to the ongoing research presently being conducted by both Dr McGeown and Dr Ievers into the development of a transdisciplinary approach to STEM education.
